Best and Worst Drugstore Dry Shampoo

When I first discovered dry shampoo, my life changed for the better (yes, in such a dramatic way).  My hair is limp, fine, and gets oily fast so that perfect trifecta (sarcasm fully intended) makes my hair upkeep an unpleasant experience.  I constantly re-do my hair to create some or any type of volume but in the process of doing so, my hair because greasy and piece-y.  So you can see how dry shampoo, which cleans, refreshes, and volumizes hair, improved my standard of living.

Because I use dry shampoo so often with several touch-ups throughout the day, I finish a can of product in just a few days. And because I love my hair and also love my wallet, I tend to purchase drugstore dry shampoos.  In my search for the best dry shampoo, I’ve compiled a list of the best and worst drugstore dry shampoos and reviews for each.

Award for the Best Dry Shampoo goest to (drumroll, please!) the true, original, Psssst! Instant dry shampoo. There’s a reason why the original is the best - Psssst! applies easily as the nozzle sprays an even amount and there is little to no white residue (for any remaining residue, I can easily work through with my fingers to dispel the product). The scent is fresh and long lasting on the hair without being discernible or overpowering during the day.  Lastly, Psssst! creates volume at the roots and gives hair a refreshed, just-washed look.  The Psssst! Instant Dry Shampoo is also the most affordable so this is a winner all around.

The second best drugstore dry shampoo is Batiste Dry Shampoo - aside from the lovely packaging, Batiste also makes hair clean and lasts for a long time (Batiste lost to Psssst! because it does not create as much volume).  I love the different scents that come with the various editions and ultimately, my hair is easier to style and manage when I apply Batiste.

Another popular dry shampoo is Not Your Mother’s Clean Freak Refreshing Dry Shampoo.  I tend to use this dry shampoo when creating a specific hairstyle because the shampoo also has the qualities of a hair spray.  The Clean Freak shampoo refreshes hair with minimal residue while also creating hold and volume.

Unfortunately, the award for the Worst Dry Shampoo goes to Batiste Dry Shampoo Brunette Hint of Color.  I tend to give the benefit of the doubt to my beauty products, but I cannot recommend Batiste Brunette to anyone (harsh, I know).  This dry shampoo has a “hint of brown” as in the dry shampoo has a brown residue. If your hair touches your face in any way (aka everyone), you will have shadowy brown spots and streaks all over.  I have bangs so after only a few hours my whole forehead was a bronzed, golden brown (imagine my frustration as I noticed this during the work day). I ended up having to use a wet wipe on my hair, having to remove and re-apply my makeup, and having to put my hair in a tight bun (can you tell I’m still bitter about it?).  This Batiste Dry Shampoo has no saving elements to it, steer clear!

Do you have an absolute favorite dry shampoo? I’m venturing in the higher end range and would love to discover new “best of” products.

Stay Pretty, Miranda M.

For people who dislike fragrances Batiste is definitively not the first choice but if it makes my hair have some volume, I’d take anything at this point haha will have to try Tresemme, I actually love their shampoo/conditioner range.

I love it, it makes my hair feel flowy and volumnious and clean what more could we ask for haha

I love Pssst! too. It was the first one that worked wonders for me.

What did we do before dry shampoo 😉 I personally do not like the Batise range only because of the scents, they don’t appeal to me but a favourite of mine is the Tresemme dry shampoo and volume - great for fine hair like mine!

Ohh, will have to go out and try it, I go shopping for dry shampoos like my life depends on it every week haha. We only have a tiny Walgreens in the whole DC area and haven’t spotted it at CVS so I’ll start my research. Thanks for the recommendation Laura!

Haha you definitely tried it, all right - I totally forgot about the “dirt” nails look. I’m constantly touching my hair and didn’t know why my knuckles and nails looked so bad that day, it was also getting on all things I was touching gahh! You’re the second to recommend the Dove so it’ll be my next purchase.

Oyyy so jealous of full, luscious, Disney hair haha when I pulled my hair away from my face the Brunette was fine but even then it was on the back of my neck, it may be my hair texture. The pssst one is really great, much longer lasting than Batiste and I feel it adds more volume. I’ve heard the same about non spray bottles, will def have to find some and try them!

I was reading some reviews and people have had weird reactions to Batiste like itchy scalp or extra powdery hair so you’re not the only one. Most all dry shampoos would do oil reduction and volumize but because you are looking for texturizing I’d recommend a dry shampoo that also mimics hair spray - there’s a lot of those that I did try and use, they basically add dry shampoo and fixing spray to make it stay. Try Serge Normant Dry Shampoo or Got2B Powder’ful (review here) - the Got2B is affordable and it’s a “styling” powder so it does more than dry shampoo. Hope this helps!

it kept being on my list because it made sense to have a brunette dry shampoo…but I’ll take white residue that I can wash anytime over dark residue that gets on my face and makes my whole neck dirty haha not sure how it passed the development team, it literally gets everywhere within an hour. the original is the best and it has lovely scents!

I’m so glad you mentioned the Batiste Brunette-I was looking at this the other day but ended up not purchasing it, now I’m so glad I didn’t! Yuck!

  • http://www.blogger.com/profile/04373737784876340906 Pretty Squared

I’m personally not a fan of Batiste Dry Shampoo’s. I’m not sure if it’s because I have quite fine hair and it’s on the “just too powdery” side, which weights down my hair. Which one would you suggest for me? I guess I’m after a oil reducing, voluminous and texturising product? I’ve heard the VO5 Pump it up is good..?

that is so interesting. I never experienced the same with Batiste brunette, maybe because I do not have bangs. But I do want to try out the pssst one if I can find one. I pretty much have the same hair as you and appreciate volume when I can have it. I heard dry shampoo in non spray bottle give better volume. I am not sure if it is true, but I want to try it out too.

I will definitely have to try your number one choice as I have tried all of the other ones. I totally agree about the Batiste with the hint of brunette, absolutely awful! It stains your nails and just makes you look plain dirty! I also really like the Dove dry shampoo as well 😀

I’ve tried sooo many different dry shampoos and the Pssst and Batise are the best. It even does better than some of the more expensive brands. Love it! ^_^ Too bad the colored one didn’t work out. I have the blonde one and I don’t have that problem. But it might just be the lighter color. :/

You seriously need to try the Herbal Essences Naked Dry Shampoo. It is my favorite. That and the Salon Grafix one.

I’ve never tried the Marc Anthony line products will have to try it, I love me volume and freshness!

I love Batiste dry shampoos, let me know what you think about the Pssst one! thanks for stopping by!

  • http://www.blogger.com/profile/04373737784876340906 Pretty Squared

I didn’t realize Batiste had different scents the first time I bought one but now I want to try and collect them all haha I’ve had a lot of people recommend the blush scent, it sounds absolutely lovely and it’ll be my next purchase! thank you for the recommendation!

My sister introduced me to dry shampoo because I have oily hair and same, it was like the best discovery I could have had haha! My hair gets greasy within an hour or two of washing so it’s so essential I have a dry shampoo in my purse the whole time. Ouch…will have to stay away from the Tresseme, sounds pretty terrible!

  • http://www.blogger.com/profile/04373737784876340906 Pretty Squared

Whatever you do, don’t try the brunette one haha i was in the bathroom at work and kept thinking that the lighting was weird because of all the shadows on my face (and when I checked in my handheld mirror and saw all those marks from the shampoo, ohhh weee was I mad haha) Pssst! and Batiste are really close in terms of how good they are but Psssst! just seemed to give my hair a bit more volume. Let me know what you think about it!

Marc Anthony dry shampoo is what I keep on reaching for. Not only does it add volume but, keeps my hair fresh and has a great scent.

I was convinced after I tried the Tresemme dry shampoo that dry shampoo would never work on my hair because it was just so awful. But now, I swear by the Dove Style+Care one - it leaves very little residue, great volume and actually makes my hair feel cleaner. Really subtle fresh scent to it as well.

    • http://www.blogger.com/profile/04373737784876340906 Pretty Squared

Haha I get that often where I’m disappointed by the first product and never want to try something again! I also heard about the Dove one but haven’t been able to track it down at my local CVS, will have to branch out to find it, I adore Dove products so I can’t wait to try it!

I was skeptical because the packaging is so 90s haha but it’s the oldest one for a reason! i love it, I’m on my 5th can now

My favourite one is the Klorane. I don’t know if it is easily available in the US but in Canada it is sold in drugstores. It’s more on the expensive side though, around 12$. I’ve tried a few from Batiste, Dove and Charles Worthington (in the UK). None is better than Klorane!

    • http://www.blogger.com/profile/04373737784876340906 Pretty Squared

I received a Klorane dry shampoo in my Birchbox and quite loved it! I went through the sample in a few days that’s all I used, but I need to try the large size and see the price/use comparison - I think Klorane is sold in some Walgreens here, I’ll have to double check! Thanks for the recommendation, will have to try it next!

I absolutely love my Batiste dry shampoo in Blush! I was considering trying the one for brunettes, and now I definitely won’t, so thanks for writing this review! I’ll have to try Psssst!

Batiste is the only dry shampoo I’ve tried and loved, so I’ve been sticking with it! I have the blush scent right now, but I love cherry the best :p

I just tried Baptiste and it has been amazing. I have the most oily hair and I have to wash it every day but the dry shampoo actually worked, I couldn’t believe it :) The worst and only other dry shampoo I’ve tried is one from Tresseme and I swear it just made my hair even oilier, it was awful.
